There is so much more to do for your lawn than just cutting and watering during  the summer months.  Here we have some tips and great products that will help keep your lawn in tip top form.

The heat waves and tropical storms which we have experienced this year have played havoc with our green, green grass at home. Water swamped and heat stressed lawns are just some of the problems facing gardeners. With a little bit of TLC, and the right assistance you can get the grass back to tip top shape again.

Watering

This can be a bit more tricky than usual this summer season when we have torrential downpours for a few days followed by a week or so with no rain at all. As a general guide, the grass in your garden will need about 20 litres of water per square meter. In times of unusual heatwaves, you should water two to three times a week. If you notice track marks or footprints in the grass, this can be a sign of dehydration and a cry for irrigation. Water the grass in the early morning or in the late evening. If you irrigate at other times, the direct sunlight on damp lawns can lead to burnt areas appearing. If you plant trees, hedging or shrubs around the lawn it will increase the moisture level in the grass and also assist with drainage. Some gardeners place a water meter on the lawn, but an easy hack for this is to place a jam jar on the corner of the lawn and simply check to see  how much it has rained during the week.

Mowing

In summer, you might be tempted to cut the grass really short. However, if you can keep the blades of grass a little bit longer and avoid scalping the lawn. It helps to keep the moisture in. The grass should be mowed to 4-5 cm where it is exposed to sun and to 5-7cm in the shadier spots.

Feeding

A lot of gardener’s neglect to feed their lawns during summer. Yes, the grass needs fertilizer from November to December, but most of these nutrients are just about used up midsummer. To help your lawn beat the summer heat it needs fertiliser that is rich in nitrogen, potassium, magnesium and calcium (like this one), so it is well prepared for hot temperatures as well as summer thunderstorms. A lawn tonic is perfect for most lawns and might be just what you need. Who doesn’t need a tonic every now and again. The Greenforce lawn tonic has quite the magic effect on dull discoloured lawns and can bring it back to bright emerald, green in just 24 hours. It also helps to reduce moss. Apply with a sprayer or watering can from March to September.

Weeds and Moss

Healthy grass will be stifled by moss and weeds. Of course, moss can look green and healthy from a distance but up close the grass is struggling for survival as the moss takes over. Moss is quite easy to get rid of.  In fact, we have a product which will feed the grass, kill the weeds and eradicate the moss!  All three in one go. Green Force Lawn Feed Weed and Moss killer does just that. This makes it one of the best value products on the market, but what else would you expect from the Dandy’s Derrynoose, where we sell the best products at fantastic prices. Call in and see us or order online and keep the grass growing green around you!
