When is the best time to buy home heating oil?

Home heating oil prices fluctuate quite a bit.  Of course, here at The Dandy’s Derry noose we keep the price low at all times and are the best value in Ireland!  Yet, even here, there can be factors that cause the prices to change, and the canny homeowner can keep an eye on these factors and knows the best time to fill the tank.

Summer can often be the best time to order a fill of kerosene.  Globally the price of crude oil, which is linked to the price of home heating oil, can go down in the summer months as demand lessen. Demand has a big influence over the price of the end product.  During the pandemic, for example, the price of crude oil dropped considerably due to the lack of demand for factories and the aviation industry. Prices of home heating oil subsequently plummeted to an all-time low.  (Even for us!) Prices have crept up a little since then. The demand can be seasonal so Summer may well be the right time to order heating oil.   No more than saving the hay or gathering in the turf in preparation for the winter ahead, it makes sense to order heating oil in the warmer months.  Make sure that your heating oil tank has a good lock on it and is safe from oil theft.  The last thing you want to do is lose the lot to unscrupulous thieves. It’s not just the value of the oil that is at risk, the damage to the tank by thieves and the potential clean-up costs for spillage should be considered. These is also the  total  inconvenience and upset. A pad- lock and good light is often deterrent enough for would be oil thieves.

Global politics, wars, revolutions and unrest can affect the supply of crude oil and cause kerosene to go up in price.  Similarly, adverse weather conditions in oil producing countries mat cause disruptions in the supply too.  OPEC are a group of 14 oil producing countries who wield a great deal of power and influence over the supply, demand and the pricing of oil.  Geopolitical factors and climate changing regulations can all cause a change in the price of These are all things we can have no control over but may well cause price changes.
